Giving to Those Who Give so Much

For those who lack sufficient resources, ReSOURCE provides the ReLIEF Essential Goods Program, which unites local and regional nonprofits and service providers and provides essential household items to those who most need them. ReSOURCE allocates a requested donation amount to partner organizations and these organizations then issue vouchers to their clients to “purchase” ReSOURCE goods and services.

Carl and Rebecca, a local couple, exemplify the importance and impact of this program. Carl and Rebecca recently decided to provide temporary housing for a young adult with disabilities. They were determined to provide more than a place to stay; they wanted to give her a home.

Both Carl and Rebecca had been laid-off from their jobs this year. While difficult, Rebecca decided that this was her opportunity to explore her interests in criminal justice and immigration advocacy, so she went back to school and works part-time in respite care. Despite their hardships in this faltering economy, Carl and Rebecca knew they could offer a stable and loving home. As soon as they met her, they fell in love with this young person who has had a hard row to hoe but is kind and determined.

“She desperately needed a place to stay and had no belongings; she needed someone that would be able to provide both physical and emotional support. We were inspired by my father,” says Rebecca. “He cares for a special needs person.” Knowing that the young girl could benefit from their experience and guidance, they decided to move forward despite the obstacles.

One immediate need was furnishing the young woman’s room. Rebecca contacted ReSOURCE and spoke to a staff person working with our ReLIEF program. Rebecca requested a bed and a dresser. We could fulfill her request in time to furnish the bedroom before their new family member came to stay.

Carl and Rebecca’s generous spirit is creating a safe and healthy home for someone who has not had that experience in a long time. We are glad to have had a small part in helping this young person have a place to hang her pictures, put away her clothes, and settle in. We wish them all the best of luck.
